Freelancer tax deadlines 2026: the Dutch VAT calendar and key dates

Missing deadlines costs money: late with your VAT return means a fine. Luckily the key dates for 2026 are easy to remember. Put them in your calendar and you'll be on time.

The quarterly VAT return

Most freelancers file VAT every quarter. The rule is simple: your return and your payment must be in within one month after the quarter ends.

Quarter 2026PeriodDeadline (return + payment)
Q1Jan – Mar30 April 2026
Q2Apr – Jun31 July 2026
Q3Jul – Sep31 October 2026
Q4Oct – Dec31 January 2027

Note: both the return and the payment must be on time. Keep a few days' margin, especially if the deadline falls on a weekend.

The income tax return

You report your 2025 income tax in 2026. The return can usually be filed between 1 March and 1 May. Can't make it in time? Request an extension from the tax office before 1 May.

How to never miss a deadline

  • Set money aside in time. Put the VAT and part for income tax aside right away. Then the money is ready on the deadline. Read how much in Saving for tax.
  • Keep your admin up to date. If your revenue and VAT are already added up per quarter, the return itself takes little time.
  • Plan a few days' margin. Don't file on the last day.

In BoekBrug your VAT is always ready

In BoekBrug your revenue and VAT are added up per quarter automatically. So at the end of each quarter you see exactly what you owe or get back, and your return is as good as done. Want an estimate now? Use the free calculator below.
